07 Jul Promoting Your Blog Through Pinterest Part One: The Basics
In March 2010, three entrepreneurs launched a new social networking site from an apartment in San Francisco. The concept? A virtual pinboard where users could “pin” their favorite things to personal interest boards to share with their followers. By December 2011, the site was one of the top 10 largest social sites with over 11 million visits each week and was named the best new startup of the year by TechCrunch, a top tech industry publisher.
That site (if you haven’t already guessed) is none other than Pinterest, and in September 2017, it had more than 200 million users registered. A recent statistic showed that 5% of all referral traffic to websites comes from the social networking site which isn’t hard to believe when two-thirds of pins represent products or brands. Couple those stats with the fact that 87% of pinners say they’ve used the site to make a purchase decision, there’s no question that you should be promoting your blog through Pinterest as part of your social media marketing campaign.
When 96% of users say they use the site to research and gather information, it’s no surprise that more than 14 million articles are pinned each day. These stats alone should convince you why you should use this site to promote your blogs. Not sure where to begin? Don’t worry. In the next few paragraphs I’ve written a quick tutorial on how to effectively post and promote your blog on this increasingly popular site.
The first step in promoting your blog here is to create a board for your blog. If you have a large number of articles, create multiple blog boards based on the most common categories your article topics tend to fall under.
Every pin you create should include a relevant and eye-catching image that links to your blog post. My favorite way to create social media images is Canva, an online graphic design tool that’s simple and free to use. There, you’ll find design presets for everything from email headers to social media graphics, including a Pinterest graphic. Think of these images as the “book cover” for your blog.
Once you’ve created the perfect cover for your blog, use the upload pin option to upload your image (the red and white plus sign icon at the top right hand corner of the page.)
When the upload pop up screen appears, you’ll have one section to upload your image and another section for your destination address. For this section, you’ll use a direct link to your blog post for the destination address. Once the image is uploaded, users can click on the image and be taken directly to your blog post.
Promoting your articles on this social networking site doesn’t stop here. When you’re ready to pin your post, you’ll have the option to include a description of the pin, which typically includes the title of your blog and a short description of the post. This little description should pack a lot of punch for high engagement. According to the site, pins with the highest engagement include a description that is:
- Helpful–Accurately describe your pin to make it easy for pinners to find it in a search.
- Interesting–using enticing words that draw on the emotions of the user.
- Detailed–Include enough info about your pin to encourage pinners to want to know more.
- Actionable–include phrases such as “click to learn more” that call the pinner to act by clicking on your pin. Your description acts as your call-to-action for pinners to read your blog.
Once you’ve got a knock-your-socks-off description, it’s time to choose the board you want to pin to and complete your upload. Now, your pin is ready for the world to view!
Here’s another fun fact about Pinterest for business. You can view each of your pins’ stats directly from your page. Below each pin image, right next to the title, you’ll see three bars and a number. Clicking on the bars will bring up a pop up screen that displays engagement statistics for that pin. This screen even shares how many times that particular pin has appeared during the current month.
