Last week while I was prospecting, I visited a website of a business with whom I’d like to work. Their website design blew me away. Maybe they didn’t need our help on their website, but I could certainly learn from what worked in their design.
In fact, learning from the great design of other websites is one of our first starting places when we’re designing or redesigning a website for a client. Website design overall takes time. If you’ve done a little pre-planning, you can save yourself and your website developer a lot of time.
One of the first places we start on a new website is with websites our client likes. Most business owners have visited their competitor’s websites and industry leaders’ sites. They know what they like, and don’t like, in what they’ve seen. You can get ahead of the design game by making a list of sites you like and what you like (and dislike) about each one.
Your website designer will also need a high-resolution copy of your company’s logo. If you know the exact colors and font used in that logo, even better. We suggested creating a folder on your computer or on Google Drive where you can save all those files you’ll need.
Do you have already have high-resolution headshots of you and your team? Product photos? Images of your building’s interior? Event photos? Any of these images you’d like to use on your website should go into the website folder we suggested you create above. By having all these images already available, your website company will spend less time waiting on you to track down images.
Design and aesthetics are important aspects of your website, but if the site doesn’t function well, it’s not worth much. If you have a current website make a list of what functions work well and what you’d like to add. Medical clinics may love the way their providers’ images are front and center on the website, but they might want to add an option for patients to make an appointment online. B2B companies might want to add inbound lead generation or a blog to their site. Know what you want a customer to do when they visit your site before you start your website design project.
Pages work hand in hand with the functionality of your site. A good website designer will help you consolidate or break out pages as needed to help with the flow of your website. Most consumers expect websites to have about and contact pages as well as the home page. If you have an idea of the pages you’ll need, your designer can help you create a site that flows and allows all your information to be found easily.
