A Quick Rundown of 2020’s Top Marketing Trends

A Quick Rundown of 2020’s Top Marketing Trends

2020 and a new decade is upon us and we couldn’t be more excited about the future of digital marketing as we enter the Roaring Twenties 2.0. The 2010s was a revolutionary decade for all things digital and today’s marketing techniques have evolved in ways we could only begin to imagine at the start of 2010. In the last year alone, digital marketing evolved again in a major way with AI, video content, and augmented and virtual reality marketing. These marketing strategies will be some of the biggest trends we’ll see in the year to come. Take a look at how these trends and others will change digital marketing in 2020.

Virtual and Augmented Reality

Virtual and Augmented Reality has finally evolved outside of those huge headsets and chairs we see in malls. Brands like Home Depot, Sherwin Williams and Wayfair use AR to allow shoppers to place their products right inside their homes.

Shoppable Social Posts

In 2018, Instagram introduced shoppable Insta ads and brands like Wayfair, who are always ahead of the marketing curve, jumped at the opportunity to make shopping even easier for today’s consumers. Pinterest added their own shoppable pins in 2019 which prompted IKEA to turn their entire catalog into a shoppable Pinterest board. Pretty cool, huh?

Personalized Marketing

What is personalized marketing? When you create an ad set for, let’s say Facebook, that reaches a specific group of consumers, you are using personalized marketing. Everything from the content of the ad to the age and location of the audience as well as their personal interests is used to strategically place ads in front of audiences that are most likely to shop your products or choose your company for service. Geofencing is one of the newest strategies for targeting audiences. Geofencing uses GPS or RFID to establish a virtual barrier or geographic boundary for marketing. Brands use this virtual barrier to show ads to people in this location. The ads are usually targeted for a specific need that the person might be in the area for, like a discounted oil change or an urgent care clinic with a short wait time or available x-ray machine.

Interactive Marketing

Have you noticed that storytelling has become a bigger part of advertising in all areas? Today’s most touching television ads tell a story and often encourage viewers to continue the story by following a special website link. Streaming platforms like Hulu allow viewers to choose their preferred ad content. Interactive components like quizzes and video clips are used to break up the monotony of long-form post and landing pages.

Search Engine Result Page Position Zero

Being ranked #1 on a search engine is no longer good enough. Now, the position you want is that snippet of text that appears above the first search result. You’ll see more and more brands aim for this coveted spot in 2020.

Before we wrap this up, allow me to share a personal story of how today’s marketing techniques helped me make a recent important purchase.  A few months ago, my husband and I purchased our first home. During the escrow period, we used photos of our new home and Sherwin Williams’ ColorSnap Visualizer app to select paint colors. The app worked, too, but not in the way you might think. We were able to eliminate a lot of shades using the app but in the end, I decided to consult the interior designer at our local Sherwin Williams store. The app made me confident enough to want to invest in SW’s paint but not confident enough to select the paint myself. Sherwin Willams first brought me to their website, then their AR app, and finally their actual brick and mortar store to make a purchase. My experience is spot on with how other people of my generation shop and Sherwin Williams understood that.
